ECS offers its SmartRoad solution that enables condition-based inspections, monitoring, and maintenance management information for paved and mining haul road networks, reducing dustiness, energy, carbon and water, and improving productivity, safety and tyre life.
SmartRoad can be used by site-based operational teams responsible for the maintenance and management of road and plant performance. SmartRoad is primarily driven by automated and semi-automated road and plant inspections (visual and vibration) to identify and verify road defects and dust performance.
This is achieved by using automated processes such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence-enabled systems and performance analytics and Dashboards; to monitor, record, score, and report on road conditions. SmartRoad offers an authentic performance-based approach to managing road and dust maintenance teams and their activity, and providing insights into the overall road condition.

ECS’s SmartRoad utilizes three types of data acquisition systems for inspection of road condition and dustiness. These are based on: semi-automated inspection of roads and conditions (manual inspection), autonomous inspection of roads and associated conditions, and static inspection of dustiness levels at fixed locations at production haul roads, mine load and dump areas, mine material stockpiling, plant screens, conveyors and stockpiles.
Semi-automated inspection and auditing of roads utilising ruggedized handheld devices and camera technology. The vehicle passenger does the inspection, and the camera automatically captures visual records. This system requires an Operator to trigger and audit defect inspections.
ARID (Autonomous Road Inspection Device)
Autonomous road condition inspections by using an Artificial Intelligence-enabled inspection instrument. This system uses computational vision and road roughness signatures to automatically score the road condition and generate reports.
S-ARID (Static Autonomous Road Inspection Device)
Used for inspecting dustiness from static locations, using computational vision and advanced camera technology to score dust levels and signal dust level limits. This system can also be used to count traffic volume, dust palliative spray events, and enable in-cab spray requirement notifications. The unit operates without an Operator.
ARIDNet is made to support the ARID units in the field and provide an internet connection to upload audit data. ARIDNet is a mobile hotspot that gives the user both wired and Wi-Fi internet access in any location where there is a cellular signal. The equipment is fitted into a rugged carry case, making it mobile and easy to relocate. It can also be powered from a vehicle.
SmartRoad has four key components:
A portable or static measurement system for inspections
Infrastructure for handling inspection data
A cloud-based Performance Reporting Dashboard and user interface
A platform for scoring inspections (by experts or machine)

Dashboards and Reporting
The performance is monitored using the Roughness Defect Score (RDS-visual) and Road Quality Indicator Score (based on vibration road roughness). Performance Reporting is generated using Business Intelligence platforms and analytical services, resulting in dynamic reporting and insights.
